Theology Lesson FOR KIDS #16:

God Provides All Good Things in the World
What a wonderful topic to discuss as we begin the New Year together!
Listen to the Psalmist in Psalm 103:1-5...

"Praise the Lord, my soul;
all my inmost being, praise his holy name.

Praise the Lord, my soul,
and forget not all his benefits—

who forgives all your sins
    and heals all your diseases,

who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,

who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s."

Dr. Ware begins by sharing that God is responsible for giving us, "every good and perfect gift" (James 1:17).  Furthermore, those who have put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ receive their blessing by the Father through what Christ has done, as seen in Ephesians 1:3,  "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places."

Ever doubt God's love for you? Ever question God's plan for your life? consider Romans 8:31-32

"What, then, shall we say in response to these things?
If God is for us, who can be against us?
He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—
how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?"

Dr. Ware shares a simple fictions illustration of a wealthy uncle who builds you a dream home using the best materials, completely furnishes it, and prepares everything!  You sit down to share a wonderful meal and notice there are no salt and pepper shakers, do you think your uncle was not willing to get these for your family?  OF COURSE NOT! If your uncle has done this BIG thing (build your home), he certainly won't hesitate to do this small thing (get salt and pepper shakers).  Likewise God has provided for our BIG need (Salvation) He can also be trusted to give you everything else that will be good for you to have.  Dr. Ware shares this isn't a promise to get a new baseball mitt, computer, or dress BUT, "It is a promise that God will give his own children everything that God knows will truly and eternally be good for them.  As we read in the Psalms, those who seek the Lord and follow in His ways, "lack no good thing."  What a kind, generous, and giving God this true and living God is."

Therefore, we should GIVE THANKS to God.  Dr. Ware shares, "One of the marks of people who know God rightly and who know God well is that they are filled with thanksgiving to God.  A grumbling spirit is sinful, because it fails to recognize God's goodness and kindness in providing for us every good thing in life that we enjoy.  Instead of grumbling, we should accept both what God gives us and what he chooses not to give us, because in both cases he does what is best for us."

"Forget not all his benefits" Psalm 103:2

Ideas for Teaching Theology to Children...
  • Don't be afraid to challenge your child to THINK!  In a world where children have many thoughtless and effortless tasks (video games, TV, and computer time) challenge your child to THINK through great truths of the gospel!
  • Take your time to soak up truth!  Don't rush through a lesson, allow time, opportunities, and study to help resonate a specific truth within them (and us!!).
  • Begin an individual journal or family journal about the theological truths learned, review it regularly.
  • Pray that the Lord would give you wisdom and understanding as you seek to honor Him in the teaching and training of your children.
  • Pray that God would open the eyes of your child's HEART that they would EMBRACE the gospel not just KNOW the content intellectually (see this related post).
  • Talk about these truths DAILY and when teachable moments present themselves take advantage of them!
