Theology Lesson FOR KIDS #11:

God the Holy Spirit

"Many things about the Bible's teaching are difficult to understand for us.  But as we've seen, this shouldn't surprise us since God is so much bigger and greater then we can ever imagine."  Dr. Bruce A. Ware

I love the above quote because it magnifies our God and minimizes us.  Today our focus is on God the Holy Spirit!  We will focus on these two main points from Dr. Ware's book, the Holy Spirit is a genuine person and the Holy Spirit is God.

The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit is a real and genuine person NOT some force or power...

1. The Holy Spirit can be lied to, as seen in Acts 5:3, and insulted, as seen in Hebrews 10:29.  Dr Ware shares, "Try to insult the electricity that is powering your lights or your refrigerator!  You can't do it because such forces or powers are not personal.  But the Holy Spirit is personal, and so he is treated as a person."

2. The Holy Spirit has personal qualities... He has a mind and knows the thoughts of God (1 Corinthians 2:10-11), He has emotions and can be grieved (Ephesians 4:30), He has a will and gives abilities to members of the body of Christ as he so chooses (1 Corinthians 12:11), he also has the character of holiness

The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit is God...

1. He is spoken of as God as seen in 1 Corinthians 3:16, "Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?"  Having the Holy Spirit dwell within you is to have God dwelling in you!

2. The Holy Spirit does things that only God can do because the Holy Spirit IS God!
  • The Holy Spirit was part of the creation of the world.  In Genesis 1:2 and Psalm 33:6 the word "breath" is the Hebrew word "ruach," which can also refer to the "spirit" of God.
  • The Holy Spirit is spoken as the one who gives life to people so they can believe in Christ and be saved (John 3:5-6 and Titus 3:5)
  • It is the Holy Spirit who worked in the lives of the writers of the books of the Bible so that the Bible would be the Word of God (1 Corinthians 2:13 and 2 Peter 1:21).
3. The Holy Spirit has certain qualities that are true only of God because the Holy Spirit is God!
  • He lives forever or eternally (Hebrews 9:14)
  • He is everywhere present (Psalm 139:7-10)
  • Having all knowledge (1 Corinthians 2:10

General Ideas for Teaching Theology to Children...
  • Don't be afraid to challenge your child to THINK!  In a world where children have many thoughtless and effortless tasks (video games, TV, and computer time) challenge your child to THINK through great truths of the gospel!
  • Take your time to soak up truth!  Don't rush through a lesson, allow time, opportunities, and study to help resonate a specific truth within them (and us!!).
  • Begin an individual journal or family journal about the theological truths learned, review it regularly.
  • Pray that the Lord would give you wisdom and understanding as you seek to honor Him in the teaching and training of your children.
  • Pray that God would open the eyes of your child's HEART that they would EMBRACE the gospel not just KNOW the content intellectually (see this related post).
  • Talk about these truths DAILY and when teachable moments present themselves take advantage of them!
