Theology Lesson FOR KIDS #6

There is only ONE God

“I am the LORD, and there is no other;
Besides Me there is no God." Isaiah 45:5

To understand this truth Dr. Ware takes us all the way to the beginning to Genesis 1:1, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."  He gives the following three thoughts based on this verse...
  1. There is ONE and only ONE God.
  2. This ONE God has made absolutely everything--"the heavens and the earth"--that exists
  3. Because the true and living God made everything that is, He alone has the rightful rulership over everything that exists
He also shares from the story of Elijah when He confronted the prophets of Baal in 1 Kings 18.  Then, uses Isaiah 41-48 to show how God challenges false gods.  Lastly, he shares from John 17:3 how Jesus himself believed there was only one God.
"Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent." John 17:3

Specific Ideas for Teaching Lesson Six to Children:
  • Check out this lesson to teach Elijah confronting the prophets of Baal from "Bible Fun For Kids"
  • Discuss why it is important that there is only one true God.
  • Read and memorize scripture about the oneness of God.  Choose verses like Isaiah 45:5 or John 17:3 for copy work!
  • For older children beginning confronting other false gods/religion with scripture verses (don't be afraid to learn together!!)

More General Ideas for Teaching Theology to Children...
  • Don't be afraid to challenge your child to THINK!  In a world where children have many thoughtless and effortless tasks (video games, TV, and computer time) challenge your child to THINK through great truths of the gospel!
  • Take your time to soak up truth!  Don't rush through a lesson, allow time, opportunities, and study to help resonate a specific truth within them (and us!!).
  • Begin an individual journal or family journal about the theological truths learned, review it regularly.
  • Pray that the Lord would give you wisdom and understanding as you seek to honor Him in the teaching and training of your children.
  • Pray that God would open the eyes of your child's HEART that they would EMBRACE the gospel not just KNOW the content intellectually (see this related post).
  • Talk about these truths DAILY and when teachable moments present themselves take advantage of them!
