Theology Lesson FOR KIDS #3:

God is God Apart from Us
(next week God is God With Us, stay tuned!)

Verses to Consider: Acts 17:24-25, James 1:17, Isaiah 40:12

"The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is He served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything." Acts 17:24-25

Dr. Ware shares that "God is God, fully and completely, apart from us and apart from the world He has made."  God doesn't need the things that we need to exist.  We need food, shelter, air, water, clothes, doctors, medicine, and the list goes on...God DOESN'T!  He is so good, powerful, strong, and complete in Himself!  This is good news!  We serve a God who is completely dependent on nothing, He is all-encompassing, all-satisfied, all-complete!  It's hard for us to understand this because we are such needy people.

"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change." James 1:17

Because God is the giver of good and perfect He, in and of Himself, is good and perfect!!  Dr. Ware shares, "There is not one single good quality that is not contained within God's own life as God (all truth, wisdom, power, kindness, love, righteousness, etc.)...It is simply impossible for God to lack any good thing, because by his very life and being He is the One who has everything that truly and really is good."

Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance? Isaiah 40:12

The greatness of God is unfathomable!  Dr. Ware shares, "God is great, so great, that nothing could add to His greatness...We should be humble before this great and mighty God, realizing that while we can give nothing to Him that He doesn't already have, He has everything that we need.  Our hearts should long to praise this God and to live in dependence upon Him."

Specific Ideas for Teaching Lesson Three to Children:
  • Have your child list all the things they NEED to live.  Explain to them that God doesn't need those things to live as we do.  Allow their mind to really think of this truth and allow them to respond in awe and wonder!
  • Have your child think about the good gifts they have received.  Share with them James 1:17 and explain how all good and perfect things come from God.  Explain that this show us God's character.  He is GOOD and PERFECT!
  • Find a very large rock (impossible for you or your child to lift) this can represent the mountain from Isaiah 40:12.  Ask your child to pick it up and place it on a scale to weigh it.  YOU TRY too!  IMPOSSIBLE!  Show pictures or visit a real mountain to explain that God is able to weigh this on a scale.  Ask them what this tells us about God...HE IS GREAT, STRONG, POWERFUL!  Ask them what it tell us about us!
  • SING PRAISE to our GREAT GOD!  A wonderful song that would correlate with this lesson is titled, "Behold Our God."  See the video below or click HERE!

More General Ideas for Teaching Theology to Children...
  • Don't be afraid to challenge your child to THINK!  In a world where children have many thoughtless and effortless tasks (video games, TV, and computer time) challenge your child to THINK through great truths of the gospel!
  • Take your time to soak up truth!  Don't rush through a lesson, allow time, opportunities, and study to help resonate a specific truth within them (and us!!).
  • Begin an individual journal or family journal about the theological truths learned, review it regularly.
  • Pray that the Lord would give you wisdom and understanding as you seek to honor Him in the teaching and training of your children.
  • Pray that God would open the eyes of your child's HEART that they would EMBRACE the gospel not just KNOW the content intellectually (see this related post).
  • Talk about these truths DAILY and when teachable moments present themselves take advantage of them!

AND NOW...
The Featured Post from Last Week's Link-Up...

The featured post this week is, "The Role of Mothers" from the blog "So Much at Home."  If you did not have a chance to read this please take a moment now to be blessed.  The post begins with this beautiful quote below!

“I believe that a godly home is a foretaste of heaven. Our homes, imperfect as they are, must be a haven from the chaos outside. They should be a reflection of our eternal home, where troubled souls find peace, weary hearts find rest, hungry bodies find refreshment, lonely pilgrims find communion, and wounded spirits find compassion.” -Jani Ortlund
